Cinnamon tea is a widely consumed beverage, made from cinnamon sticks or cinnamon powder in hot water or milk. Cinnamon tea, is known for their sweet and typical spicy taste and aroma. It is widely loved across the globe, both for its taste as well as the medicinal and ayurvedic properties.

Nutritional Components of Cinnamon For PCOS

  1. Cinnamon and moreover cinnamon tea has several health benefits and all of its nutritional components have been mentioned below in this article by DIET4UWELLNESS
  2. Calories: Cinnamon tea, is low in calories when consumed without the external addition of any artificial or refined sugar and sweeteners. 
  3. Dietary Fibres: Cinnamon, the spice is full of dietary fibers. So, when tea made out of cinnamon is consumed, a huge share of dietary fibres also enter the body. Eventhough, cinnamon tea has lesser fibres as compared to cinnamon, as a whole.
  4. Carbohydrates: Cinnamon contains very less amount of carbohydrates. Therefore, it is absolutely safe and ideal for those who are on a weight loss journey. 
  5. Vitamins: Vitamins like Vitamin A and K are the major ones, found in cinnamon tea. 
  6. Minerals: Minerals like Calcium, Manganese, Iron, Potassium and Magnesium are some of the nutrients, which are present in cinnamon and are immensely beneficial for one’s health. 
  7. Antioxidants: Polyphenols and flavonoids, are the two main antioxidants which are present in high levels in cinnamon, and also in cinnamon tea. 
  8. Low Protein and Fats: Cinnamon tea is negligible in protein and fat content, making it easy to digest and a stubborn body weight. 

CINNAMON FOR PCOS

Earlier researches have shown that cinnamon has shown useful in managing variable PCOS symptoms. However, PCOS is somethings, which wouldn’t get cured, just by drinking cups of cinnamon tea, one should rather consult a board-certified dietician or nutritionist to help improve their PCOD conditions. Some of the ways, in which cinnamon helps in improving the PCOS symptoms are:

Regulating Menstrual Hormones with Cinnamon for PCOS

Eventhough a lot of research is still under investigation, cinnamon has shown the benefits of regulating the menstrual hormones like estrogen and progesterone, especially progesterone. 

The Power of Cinnamon for PCOS in Regulating Your Menstrual Cycle

A few studies, show that cinnamon and its products help in regulating the menstrual cycle, in women. It helps to maintain the cycle size, through months. Menstrual cycles become irregular, mainly due to hormonal imbalances, thus in such cases cinnamon might help in regulating the hormonal levels in the body, thus play a role in bettering the menstrual cycle.

Cinnamon is known to help in weight management as well. It improves metabolism and also keeps one full for longer durations of time, thus preventing overeating. Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory properties, which aids in reducing systematic inflammation, a common issue in case of PCOS.

  3. Improves Menstrual Cycle

Yes, indeed cinnamon is good for maintaining symptoms of PCOS. Cinnamon has shown evidences to reduce insulin sensitivity, which would definitely be beneficial for women suffering from PCOS. Some studies have also shown that cinnamon helps to regulate the menstrual cycle in women, by in turn regulating the sex hormones like testosterone and estrogen. PCOS is mainly caused by imbalances due to excessive testosterone in the women body, something which is unnatural for women. Testosterone is primarily a male sex hormone, whose high levels in women’s bodies, can lead to PCOS like symptoms. PCOS, also leads to frequent inflammation in the body and regular bloating. Cinnamon, having anti-inflammatory properties reduces the instances of bloating. 

HOW TO MAKE CINNAMON WATER FOR PCOS

Ingredients

  1. 1-2 cinnamon sticks or 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  2. 1 cup of water

Recipe

  1. At first, the water is boiled.
  2. Then, the cinnamon sticks are added to the boiling water or the cinnamon powder to be added in the boiling water.
  3. The water is then allowed to boil with the cinnamon sticks in it. This would allow the flavours and aroma to get infused in the water.
  4. The water is strained using a muslin cloth or a strainer.

What type of cinnamon is best for PCOS?

True cinnamon or “cyelon cinnamon” is generally the recommended type of cinnamon by board-certified dieticians and nutritionists like Dt. Rukhsana Azhar. It is recommended as it is known to have lower levels of coumarin, whose excess is detrimental. 

How to consume cinnamon for improving PCOS?

Cinnamon is good for maintaining PCOS like symptoms and it can be consumed in the following ways:

  1. Cinnamon water: Water infused with cinnamon powder or cinnamon sticks
  2. Cinnamon tea: Making tea with cinnamon sticks in them.
  3. Cinnamon powder on salads: Cinnamon powder can be used as a garnishing agent to be sprinkled over salads. 
Can one take cinnamon for PCOS?

Yes, one can definitely take cinnamon supplements instead of consuming cinnamon powder or natural cinnamon sticks in the form of ayurvedic waters and teas. However, it is best to consult a dietician like Dt. Rukhsana Azhar to choose a high-quality and high-performance cinnamon supplement for meeting the nutrition needs. 

Are there any side effects of consuming cinnamon for PCOS?

Generally, cinnamon is considered to be absolutely safe for consumption, especially to manage PCOS like symptoms. However, if consumed in larger quantities it might not be the best for one’s health and conditions of PCOS. Allergic reactions could be seen as well, like mouth sores and swelling of face.
