      Makhana, also called Gorgon nut, is a seed from the lotus plant and is mostly found in India. Also Bihar, a state in India, produces 90% of the world’s total Makhana supply. These are sun-dried lotus seeds with amazing health benefits, which are elaborated on here for you:

      1. Makhana Chivda

      •  Dry roast 2 cups of makhana in a pan for 5-6 minutes until crisp.
      •  Heat 1 tsp oil, add 10-12 peanuts, and fry until golden.
      • Toss in 1 tsp cumin seeds, a pinch of turmeric, and salt to taste.
      • Mix the roasted makhana with the spiced peanuts and cool before serving.

      2. Makhana Kheer (Dessert)

      • Roast 1 cup of makhana in 1 tsp ghee until crunchy, then crush half coarsely.
      • Boil 2 cups of milk in a pot and add the makhana.
      • Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens.
      • Mix in 2 tbsp sugar and a pinch of cardamom powder.
      • Serve warm or chilled, garnished with chopped nuts.

      3. Makhana Curry

      • Roast 1.5 cups of makhana in 1 tsp oil for 3-4 minutes, then set aside.
      • Blend 1 tomato, 1 onion, and 2 garlic cloves into a paste.
      • Heat 2 tsp oil in a pan, add the paste, and cook until oil separates.
      • Add 1 tsp turmeric, 1 tsp cumin powder, salt, and 1 cup water, then simmer for 5 minutes.
      • Stir in the makhana, cook for 2 minutes, and garnish with coriander.

      How Much Makhanas to Consume In Different Forms?

      According to physicians, a healthy person can consume 3-6 gms of powdered Makhana in small doses after meals. You can eat powdered Makhana with a dash of honey or a glass of warm milk.
