Specialist in prosthodontics Dr Micheál Healy discusses the latest innovations in restorative materials, techniques and workflows.
What are the key challenges in the use of composite to restore teeth?
- What are the indications and advantages of the injection moulding technique?
- What is the alternate tooth technique?
- What are the main challenges encountered in indirect restorations?
Find the answer to these and many more related questions in GC’s recent interview with Dr Micheál Healy.
Micheál is a specialist prosthodontist currently operating at The Kingdom Clinic in Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland. He is also a visiting specialist at Alpha House Dental Practice & Implant Centre in Birchington, Kent.
The evolving indications of composite restorations
With the advances in modern technology, and composites in particular, Micheál has become a strong advocate of the injection moulding technique. He explains how the technique allows for predictable aesthetic outcomes in cosmetic indications such as short teeth or minor orthodontic camouflage, and for what he describes as ‘the big indication’ of the management of moderate to severe tooth wear.
Material selection is key to the success of the injection moulding technique. Micheál explains clearly why his material of choice is G-ænial Universal Injectable (GUI) flowable composite from GC.
Micheál has been using GUI since 2021. He says: ‘To say it changed the way I work is an understatement.’ He discusses the science behind GUI that gives it such durable characteristics and the reasons why it has such optimal strength, wear and aesthetic properties.
Techniques and training
Micheál is actively involved in dental training and education. He explains more about his own hands-on course on the injection moulding technique, that allows him to bring his experience to a new generation of dentists, along with his understanding of tooth wear and treatment planning which he gained during his prosthodontic training.
Two techniques Micheál touches on further are the alternate tooth technique and composite layering, which he often combines within a digital workflow.
And finally, Micheál gives his take on the exciting developments he sees on the horizon for restorative dentistry, including the increasing role of AI, the evolution of material science and the challenges of managing tooth wear in an adult population who are retaining their teeth longer than ever before.
