Rhea Seehorn is surrounded by creepily happy and helpful people as the world seems to fall apart in the first trailer for “Pluribus,” the sci-fi drama from “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan, debuting on Apple TV with two episodes on Nov. 7.
Gilligan reunites with the “Better Call Saul” Emmy nominee for the series, in which Seehorn stars as Carol, described as “the most miserable person on Earth” who “must save the world from happiness.”
Not much is revealed in the trailer, except for that most of humanity seems to have fallen under some sort of spell — except for Carol. Over a montage of scientists in hazmat suits working in a lab, the President of the United States tells her, “Rest assured, Carol. We will figure out what makes you different. … So you can join us.”
“Pluribus” also stars Karolina Wydra (“Sneaky Pete”) and Carlos-Manuel Vesga (“Donde Tú Quieras”), and guest stars Miriam Shor (“American Fiction”) and Samba Schutte (“Our Flag Means Death”). The series has already been renewed for a second season at Apple TV.
The streamer first officially teased the series on July 25, releasing a cryptic video of a woman in scrubs licking donuts and putting them back into a box labeled “Help yourself” with a smiley face. Three days later came another teaser clip of Seehorn walking toward a phone, with the words “Call us” and “No pressure” alongside a phone number operated by Apple. Those who called the number and dialed “0” received a text message that said, “Please know your life is your own, Carol. You have agency!”
“Pluribus” is produced by Sony Pictures Television and executive produced by Gilligan alongside Gordon Smith, Alison Tatlock, Diane Mercer, Allyce Ozarski and Jeff Frost. Co-executive producers are Jenn Carroll and Trina Siopy. Besides the short-lived 2015 dramedy “Battle Creek,” which Gilligan co-created with David Shore, “Pluribus” marks Gilligan’s first venture outside of the world of “Breaking Bad” in 17 years.
Teasing “Pluribus” with Variety in 2023, Gilligan said the series has “no crime, and no methamphetamine,” unlike his last two projects. “The world changes very abruptly in the first episode, and then it is quite different. It’s the modern world — the world we live in — but it changes very abruptly,” he said. “And the consequences that that reaps hopefully provide drama for many, many episodes after that.”
