Mia Love, the trailblazing former U.S. Representative and the first Black Republican woman elected to Congress, is facing a dire turn in her battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer. Her daughter, Abigale Love, recently shared a heartbreaking update, stating that Mia’s condition has worsened, and her cancer is no longer responding to treatment.
In a post on her mother’s X (formerly Twitter) account, Abigale emphasized that their priority now is to be with Mia and ensure her comfort during this challenging time.
Love, who was diagnosed with glioblastoma (GBM) in 2022, has been undergoing immunotherapy since August 2023 as part of a clinical trial at The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University. GBM is known for its aggressive nature, with an average life expectancy of 12-24 months after diagnosis, and a survival rate of only 10% beyond five years, according to MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Despite the grim prognosis, Love remained hopeful and leaned on her Mormon faith for strength. In a 2023 interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, she shared her belief in both science and faith, recalling a spiritual blessing that assured her a long and fulfilling life as long as she remained in public service.
Mia Love, 49, served Utah’s 4th Congressional District from 2015 to 2019, making history with her election. After her tenure in Congress, she transitioned to media roles, becoming a political commentator on CNN and a guest panelist on ABC’s “The View.”
Throughout her journey, Love has been an advocate for hope and resilience. Last year, she shared a message of encouragement with those facing similar battles, expressing gratitude for the strength she draws from her faith and family.
“I recently shared details of my cancer journey with my friend Jake Tapper. It hasn’t been an easy journey, but I share it because I want my journey to give others hope,” she wrote on Facebook. “Whether you are facing a cancer diagnosis yourself or fighting a different battle, there is hope! For me, that hope comes from my faith and my family. Both have been a source of immeasurable strength, peace, love, and support. Every day, I thank God for my life and a family who give that life beauty and meaning.”
Utah Governor Spencer Cox joined many in expressing support for Love and her family. In a social media post, he wrote, “Mia Love has served Utah with integrity, and her strength and grace continue to inspire us. Our hearts are with Mia and her family during this difficult time. Utah stands with you.”
As Love’s battle continues, her legacy as a dedicated public servant and a beacon of hope remains an inspiration to many.
