Hampson House aims to free up space for development of new critical care wing at Rotunda Hospital on Parnell Street site

A new state-of-the-art facility dedicated to outpatient and ambulatory services will provide care to over 100,000 patients annually.

Hampson House, a new outpatient and ambulatory site in Dublin city centre, will support the Rotunda Hospital in providing a wide range services for its patients.

The facility in the newly refurbished Clery’s Quarter was opened this week by Tánaiste Micheál Martin.

“The opening of Hampson House represents a major step forward in delivering modern and more dignified healthcare services to mothers, babies, and families in Ireland,” he said.

“This modern facility will not only enhance patient care but also enable the development of critical infrastructure at the Rotunda Hospital as it prepares to meet the needs of future generations.”

Hampson House will serve as the primary location for a wide range of outpatient services, including maternity and paediatric outpatient appointments, colposcopy, perinatal mental health, as well as social work, radiology and dietetics.

By relocating its outpatient services to Hampson House, the Rotunda Hospital will be able to progress plans for a transformative critical care wing on its historic Parnell Square campus.

A planning application was submitted for the proposed critical care wing in December. The planned works include a new and expanded neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and special baby care unit (SBCU).

The development would also provide for increased delivery suite and operating theatre capacity as well as additional single-occupancy postnatal beds and enhanced clinical support facilities, including a central services supplies department (decontamination) and radiology.

“The relocation of outpatient services to Hampson House is a key enabler for the Rotunda’s broader vision to provide safe, dignified, and high-quality care,” said the Master of the Rotunda Prof Seán Daly.

“The Rotunda Hospital has been an integral part of the fabric of Dublin city centre since 1745. Hampson House will expand the footprint of the Rotunda campus, ensuring that the strong relationship with the community is enhanced even further.

“We are on track to celebrate a momentous milestone in 2027 when we welcome the one-millionth baby delivered in the heart of Dublin city at the Rotunda Hospital.”

Hampson House is named after Ms Sara E Hampson (1860–1908). She was one of the first members trained in the Nightingale School of Nursing at St Thomas’s Hospital, London, and worked there before being selected from 66 applicants as the first lady superintendent (1891–6) of the Rotunda Hospital.
